In Florida, there are two types of homes: those that have termites and those that are going to get them. It’s an accepted part of life in the Southeast because termites love the warm weather just as we do. Floridians spend about 2 billion dollars per year repairing damage caused by insects and wood inhabiting fungi.
Most homes with termites do not have major structural damage. Termite inspectors are not home inspectors or structural engineers. They inspect your home for evidence of the presence of termites and inform you of the treatment needed if evidence is found. If you feel there is major damage to your home, you should contact a general contractor for estimates for repair.
Fossilized remains of termites have been found in formations some 55 millions years ago. The Romans referred to these insects as “Termes”, which appropriately means woodworm. The two most common types are subterranean termites and drywood termites.
The treatments for subterranean and drywood termites are different, so treating your home for only one type of termite will not guarantee you are protected from the other. Drywood termites can be treated with a localized or spot treatment if the affected area is in a small area and in a newer home. Otherwise, the most effective treatment is to fumigate the home, or fill it with gas that will kill all insects in the home.
Subterranean termites live in the ground and are normally treated with a baiting system around the perimeter of the home or by injecting a termiticide into a trench dug around the perimeter of the home. Treatments for both types of termite are usually given a one-year warranty with the option for renewal annually.
