Everyone is exposed to some form of mold on a daily basis without evident harm. Molds are simple microscopic organisms present virtually everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold growth on surfaces often can be seen in the form of discoloration- frequently green, brown or black, but not limited to those colors. You may also expect mold growth if you smell a musty or earthy odor.
Active mold growth within a home may lead to adverse health conditions such as upper respiratory infections or allergy symptoms. Whether or not symptoms develop in people depends on the type of fungal material, the amount of exposure, and the susceptibility of any exposed persons. Spores that affect one person might not have any effect on another. Some molds produce compounds that have toxic properties called mycotoxins. This type of mold is an instant red flag.
One of the first and most common steps taken to detect mold is air sampling. This determines each type of mold spore and how much of each spore you have inside and outside the home. If the mold spores found inside the house are double or significantly greater than the spores found outside, the laboratory will indicate they feel like you may have a problem in your home.
The largest contributing factor for mold growth is leaks. Mold must have moisture to survive. Before cleaning your home, find the source of moisture penetration and repair it. Please be careful to use an experienced, qualified company for mold removal and remediation. Improper testing and removal can actually spread mold.
